THE RED APRON. I Must own that my dislike to go into the poultry yard arose only from fear. Yes, fear! Like all young girls of my age, I liked the beautiful white-crested hens with their chickens about them; the pigeons, and even the little ducks. I liked to see the little ducks take their food in a sort of trough which Augustus had made, but I had a fear of the turkeys and the geese, which I could not overcome, and it was not without reason. For at first, without having any fear of them, and only thinking that they were as homely as they could be, I went one day to carry some bread and fruit to my white hens and pigeons, and I had hard work to get away from the geese and turkeys, who ran up, and began greedily to devour the food I had brought for my favourites, and so put them to flight. I took off my red silk apron, and shook it at them, like a flag, but the moment theysaw it, the turkeys swelled up, the geese began to clap their wings, and to reach out towards me their long serpent-like necks, with their bills wide open, and hissing. . . . From being the pursuer, I became the pursued, and with such rage on their part, that, almost out of my wits, I could scarcely find the gate, although it was wide open. After that day I went into the poultry yard with great caution. The turkeys always seemed to me ready to swell up; the geese prepared to hiss and give me a blow with their wings or bill, and my aunt, without knowing it, made me still more afraid, by saying, It is strange that Caroline never shows herself in the poultry yard, but my pets are all in commotion, although she always carries something to them. There is the great gander, Dicky, especially, who always looks at her with spite. I had never the honour of personally knowing the great gander, ...
