Art. v., sec. 1: " The judicial power of this commonwealth Khali be vested in a Supreme Court; in Courts Over and Terminer, and General Jail Delivery; in a Court of Common Pleas; Orphans' Court, Registrar's Court, and in a Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace for each county; in Justices of the Peace; and in such other courts as the Legislature may from time to time establish." Here are courts enough to make the most voraciou lawyer's mouth water; and when he considers that each State has a repetition of these processes of justice, beside the High Court of Chancery and Federal Courts of the general Government, in his inward heart, whatever cither men may say, a lawyer must admire the American institutions, and feel that it is the perfect paradise of lawyers--and so it is. A lawyer in America is the most important of all men. He is the first man of the State--the aristocracy, if there be such a thing in existence there. They obtain high remuneration for their labours and climb to political influence with greater facility than most other men--witness Clay, Webster, and others. Webster frequently has one thousand dollars for pleading a single cause. In their courts there are none of the wonderful paraphernalia of office, such as we see in Europe. There are no bag wigs covered with powdered larch; and no gowns, the emblems of garrulity. But judges and counsel are dressed as gentlemen, and plead and deliver their judgments with gravity becoming the high functions of their office.
