[CONCLUDED.] OUR next undertaking was one of those which road so innocently in Baedecker, and you do not realize until afterwards what a deal of reading between the lines one ought to do in order to lake it at its full value. It was nothing less than going to Aoata. and so up to Zermatt over the Tin odule pass, between Monta Rosa and the Materhorn. This is gently recorded in Baedecker as a matter of about five hours up and about the same down, and I had proposed to divide it by staying at the top over night. But tilings turned out differently, as will appear. From Courumyer we took carriage to Aosta, down the beautiful valley of the same name. This was one of the most delightful drives of the trip. It was all. the way down hill, the descent being two thousand feet in twenty-one miles. The road was excellent, and the team, for a wonder, was likewise, and we took the trip in a smart trot, with little interruption. Old castles, and queer old Italian villages were the features, with inspiring views of Mt. Blanc in the background, and other peaks in various directions made up a romantic landscape, or a series of them, all that bright summer afternoon. At Aosta we took train a few miles to Chatillon, where we stayed all night. This was our first point of departure for Zermatt. Chatillon lies (perhaps sits would be a better word) at an elevation of 1800 feet. From here by carriage to Val Tournache there is an ascent of three thousand feet, which means walk the horses all the way. But the valley is very romantic and grand, and the drive was memorable. At Val Tournache, pause for dinner. Here the guide engaged at Chatillon appears, with the two mules ordered for the ladies and the other baggages.
