VENUS AS A MORNING STAR, NOVEMBER, 1887 (w. F. D.) I. Nov. 2nd, 6h. 3Om. a. m. 2. Nov. 3rd, 7h. a. m. 3. Nov. 5th, yh. a. m. 4. Nov. 6th, yh. 3Om. a. m. (1o-inch Reflector, power 252.) VENUS. For a breeze of morning moves And the planet of Love is on high, Beginning to faint in the light that she loves On a bed of daffodil sky, To faint in the light of the sun she loves, To faint in his light and to die. Tennyson. This brilliant planet is, with the exception of the moon, our nearest neighbour in the Solar System. It was of course well known to the ancients. It is alluded to by Job (chap, xxxviii. 7), and probably by Isaiah (chap. xiv. 12). It is also mentioned by Hesiod, Homer, Virgil, Martial, and Pliny, and an observation of Venus is found on the Nineveh tablets of date B. c. 684. It was observed in daylight by Halley in July, 1716. It revolves round the sun in a period of about 225 of our days at a mean distance of about 66 millions of miles, and in an orbit inclined to the plane of theecliptic at an angle of 3 degrees, 23 minutes. In size it is only a little smaller than the earth, its diameter being about 7,510 miles. In density it is about 5 times as heavy as water.1 The flattening at the poles is generally considered as insensible. As well as can be ascertained by watching the motion of some faint spots on its surface, it has been concluded that the period of rotation, or the length of its day, PHASES OF VENUS. is a little less than that of the earth, but this is still very doubtful. It was called by the ancients Hesperus when an evening star, and Lucifer when a morning st...
