About six weeks ago a remarkable man, whose powers of reasoning and purity of life are recognized by all his countrymen, and who, by a great part of the Christian world is regarded, and justly regarded, as the most forcible expositor of Christian doctrine now living, was summoned from an obscurity of forty years to take his place as a prince of the Catholic Church. His words on that great occasion were marked by the beauty of feeling which has shown itself in everything that Cardinal Newman has written, and also by the unmistakable clearness that has always distinguished what he says from most other theological utterances of our time. To one great mischief, he said, I have from the first opposed myself. For thirty, forty, fifty years I have resisted to the best of my powers the spirit of liberalism in religion.
