Mr. Parsons was elected by a small majority as clerk of court, and the majority given you was 98 I believe. The frauds practiced by the Democrats was appalling. I have never seen or heard of anything like it. They bought every vote possible, voted two or more on one polltax receipt, having changed the name in the receipt, voted men who had moved out of the State with family stating they did not intend to return, voted men who had been challenged without swearing them, two or three fake checks which they pretended were for poll tax, but which had been fixed up on the day of election and not indorsed by the sheriff or marked paid by the bank. However that was small compared to other things, particularly in regard to the soldier vote. There were about 48 soldiers voting before they left for camps. Most of these were held until about election day by Mr. Spicer at request of the boys, and then sent out. None of them were allowed to vote. In this township, I was judge of election, and there were 45 soldier votes to be opened. At first the other judges refused to let me see the tickets for the county ballot, but I finally became suspicious and took hold of the tickets by mere force before they had been placed in the box, and made a memorandum of how they voted in the presence of the other judges. Every Republican soldier's ballot had a straight Democratic ticket in the envelope for the county, while the rest was Republican. I made memorandum of six or seven Republican soldier votes, every one having straight Democratic county tickets, and the rest Republican. All these boys are straight Republicans, and ...
