Excerpt from book: THE SILENT FOOTSTEPS. CHAPTER I. It is very dark in the cottage. The fire has been burning gloomily all the evening, and now it is sinking sullenly to sleep; not coaxed and nursed as it was wont to be, but sulkily going out to revenge itself for having been so long unnoticed. Yet there were two figures by it ? one such a little way off that it seemed strange she should not lift the nickering log ere it fell from the grate, but Mary was not thinking of the log. There she sat, her work (what a tiny piece of work it was!) lying untouchedin her lap, her hands loosely clasped together; her eyes fixed on her husband, who was sitting in the large arm-chair on the other side the fire, aye, and so near too, that his elbow rested on the broad hob which glittered feebly in the light of the candle, so near that mechanically his foot moved as the log fell heavily on the hearth. But his thoughts were not with the log! No; they were far away, so far away that it would take weeks and months to follow their track ? wide seas ? a foreign land ? strange faces ? and ? a shudder, and then a sigh, almost like a groan, bursting from the inmost heart. Oh! wife, why have you not risen up and thrown your arms round the strong man's neck, and laid your head tenderly on his breast, and bid him weep the scalding tears, which would cool his aching brow! Hush! she is stirring, she has pushed back her chair, she is coming, her arm is alreadystretched out to ? can it be only to push back the sulky log, now almost cold ? Ah! well, it was not safe there, it was well to pick it up, and she is coming now; surely she is coming, for see she has risen fully up, she has not even folded her work, but only tossed it carelessly (little dainty bit of work as it is!) into her apron, and now see, she is ? no, she ...
