Excerpt from book: MY ACQUAINTANCE WITH IRELAND AND MRS. ATKINSON. I HAVE been asked to record my impressions of Ireland when first I crossed St. George's Channel more than thirty years ago, and of that life of the Catholic Church, to which I was then introduced by Mrs. Atkinson. It is often asked of converts how they became Catholic, what influence carried them over that great gulf which opened in the sixteenth century?a gulf so deep and so hard to pass. To this question I have never made but one answer? I was converted by Ireland; and the manner in which this answer has been received has always seemed to me a measure of the overwhelming ignorance which until lately obtained in England regarding even the externals of Catholic life. It is difficult to describe in adequate words how great was the uprooting change when the Book of Common Prayer was substituted for the Liturgy of the Mass, when all that we can see with our eyes and hear with our ears was altered in each parish church in England within the space of fifty years; and it has never been well described. The child of ten in 1525 was born into another world than the child of ten in 1575. Little by little the outer framework of habit mouldered away. The sign of the cross, the beads, the statues near the altars, the bunches of flowers in season, the sanctuary lamp?all that the baby saw from the first day when it was carried into the church was gone ! Here is one instance of what became of them. I have seen and held a wooden log, its edges worn away by water, but in which Catholic eyes could trace the faint suggestion of an image of the Blessed Virgin and Child. It was picked out of a pond close to the beautiful church of Etch- ingham in Sussex, where it must have lain some three hundred years. The religious habit utterly disappea...
