About the Book

Oxford Specialty Training is a specialty revision series for postgraduate trainees, taking into account the training structures and syllabuses newly introduced by the Modernising Medical Careers initiative. Training in Anaesthesia is a curriculum-based guide to the first phase of specialty training in anaesthetics; comprehensively covering the specific techniques, assessments and basic medical and physiological knowledge that trainees are required to learn as part of their basic training. These areas are currently examined by the Primary FRCA exam as part of a student's progress towards full fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, though the knowledge contained within the book continues to apply throughout all phases of training. The book is authored by both trainees and specialists, and has been comprehensively edited and peer-reviewed by both groups in order to create an authoritative yet accessible text, highlighted and augmented by many of the diagrams and key concepts that a trainee may be expected to reproduce during viva examinations. Novel drug tables convey essential information in a new and attractive form, and the majority of images have been created specifically for this book, avoiding the cliched figures and illustrations reproduced in training texts to date. The organisation of the material is unique, and the topic-based design ensures easy navigation and structured revision and learning.

Review :
`This book is very different to all the other anaesthetic main texts. Its well written, easy to read and makes reading almost enjoyable. Explains key concepts very well. Quite a few typos but being the first edition this is forgivable. Overall, very useful, reasonably priced and an excellent core text for anaesthetics.' Amazon review `When doing the FRCA exams, it's important to get the balance right between reading reference texts and revision texts. Too much of the former, and you run the risk of being bogged down by details; too much of the latter and you end up with a superficial knowledge of things and miss out chunks of the syllabus. The beauty of this book is that it gets this balance exactly right. This book goes through the syllabus with a fine tooth-comb, and treats every part of the intimidating curriculum with equal respect - this means that you don't miss anything out, and have the depth of knowledge for each part to satisfy the RCOA. 100% Recommended as an addition to the base texts.' Amazon review `I wish I'd found this book earlier. Brilliant for Primary revision, would be really helpful for new trainees in anaesthesia or for ACCS trainees rotating through anaesthetics to have this to refer to rather than some of the more traditional textbooks which are a bit heavy on the detail.' Amazon review `This book's editors Catherine Spoors and Kevin Kiff, along with series editor Matthew D. Gardiner have done a great job compiling and organizing the voluminous amount of information and putting out this outstanding book, which was made possible with well-written articles contributed by nearly 40 experts.'
