About the Book

The aim of these two volumes is to develop a framework of theory and numerical analysis with applications to various aspects of the propagation of electromagnetic waves. The explanation is couched in as comprehensive a language as possible, and it assumes a starting point as early as is commensurate with the size of the text. This edition takes account of the analytical progress which has been made since the first edition was published, and the wider availability of powerful computers. The coverage of finite elements particularly appropriate to electromagnetic applications are described. The discussion of integral equations has been revised, and new topics have been added - including Sobolev spaces, vector optimization, absorbing boundary conditions and surface radiation conditions. D.S. Jones is the author of "Acoustic and Electromagnetic Waves", "Elementary Information Theory" and "Assembly Programming and the 8086 Processor".

Table of Contents:
Aspects of numerical analysis - interpolation and approximation, solution of equations, matrices, linear equations, generalized inverse; waveguides and difference equations; operators and eigenvalues - preliminaries, partial differential equations, unbounded operators and eigenvalues; variational methods and optimization - the derivative of an operator, Newton's method for operators, optimization, variation principles, waveguides; numerical aspects of variational methods - minimal systems, integral equations, numerical trial functions; antennas and integral equations - wire antennas, solid antennas, dielectric antennas; transient phenomena; geometric theory of diffraction; numerical solution of ordinary differential equations - canonical problems, leaky rays; source detection - inverse scattering, the inverse source problem, holographic techniques, synthesis of radiation patterns, array signal processing.
