About the Book

Paul Ewald's 1916-1917 masterpiece `On the Foundations of Crystal Optics' describes the selfconsistent interaction of electromagnetic waves with crystals on a molecular level. While astonishing in its detailed predictions for X-ray diffraction, full appreciation of the theory and its utility had to await much later advances in measurement techniques and crystal growth. Concepts introduced in the theory, now known as the Ewald sphere, Ewald summation, and Ewald-Oseen extinction, have become mainstays in diverse areas of modern physics. This memorial volume, with contributions by leading figures in the field, is an affectionate survey of his life, scientific work, and role in the international crystallographic community.

Table of Contents:
Introduction; N. Kato: The significance of Ewald's dynamical theory of diffraction; EWALD AS SEEN BY OTHERS: G. Hildebrandt: P.P. Ewald - The German period; H.A. Bethe & G. Hildebrandt; M.F. Perutz; D.C. Hodgkin: Paul Ewald in Cambridge and Belfast; H. Kamminga: Paul P. Ewald and the building of the crystallographic community; H.J. Juretschke: Paul P. Ewald - A personal appreciation; ASPECTS OF EWALD'S WORK AND THEIR LEGACIES; D.W.J. Cruickshank: The reciprocal lattice imbedded in Fourier space; D.H. Templeton: Lattice sums, the Madelung constant, and Paul Ewald; A. Authier & B. Capelle: X-ray topography; R. Colella: Multiple diffraction of X-rays and the phase problem; J.M. Cowley & A.F. Moodie: Paul Ewald and the dynamical theory of electron scattering; H.J. Juretschke: Commentary on Ewald's fundamental papers of the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction; R.K. Bullough & F. Hynne: Ewald's optical extinction theorem; D. Ewald speaks for himself: Five key papers from 1913, 1968, 1969, 1979, and 1986; P.P. Ewald: Bibliography; Index.

Review :
'One of the tests of success of a volume such as this ... is to consider how well the character and personality of the subject shines through the work. As far as I am concerned this book passes the test with flying colours. This is a splendid tribute to a very great man and should be of interest not only to students of crystallography in its myriad applications, but also to historians of science.' Professor C.A. Taylor, University of Wales, Contemporary Physics, 1993, volume 34, number 3 `Ewald as a great scientist and gentle person comes to life in this book, with the authors presenting some glimpses into his private life and providing a well rounded presentation of his major scientific contributions. This is a remarkable monograph, and should be a 'must-read' study for everyone interested in scattering problems.' Benno P. Schoenborn, J.F. McConnell, Acta Cryst. (1994) A50

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
