About the Book

This book is a comprehensive balanced and up-to-date introduction to nuclear physics that describes the experiments made to study nuclear reactions and nuclear structure, and the theories and models that have been developed to understand the properties of nuclei and their interactions. After a historical introduction, there are chapters on nuclear accelerators and detectors, elementary particles, nuclear forces, nuclear reaction theory, nuclear models, nuclear and heavy ion reactions, nuclear astrophysics and nuclear reactors. While primarily aimed at undergraduates it will also serve as a reference for graduate students and professional nuclear physicists.

Table of Contents:
Ch 1 - Historical Introduction Ch 2 - Radioactivity Ch 3 - The Discovery of the nucleus Ch 4 - Particle accelerators and neutron sources Ch 5 - Particle detectors Ch 6 - Basic Forces Ch 7 - The Leptons Ch 8 - The Hadrons Ch 9 - The Quarks Ch 10 - Laws of Invasriance Ch 11 - Boson Field Theory and Phenomenological Description of Nuclear Forces Ch 12 - Few-Nucleon Systems Ch 13 - The Theory of Scattering Ch 14 - Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering Ch 15 - Nuclear Systematics Ch 16 - Nuclear Properties Ch 17 - Nuclear Models Ch 18 - Nuclear Decay Ch 19 - General Features of Nuclear Reactions Ch 20 - Direct Reactions Ch 21 - Compound Nucleus Reactions Ch 22 - Pre-Equilibrium and Composite-Particle Reactions Ch 23 - Heavy-Ion Reactions Ch 24 - Nuclear Reactors Ch 25 - Cosmology and nuclear astrophysics

Review :
"This book follows in the post-second world war tradition of excellence in nuclear physics textbooks...It not only provides good coverage of the fundamentals of the subject but also gives an account of ideas and data in 1990s...The theoretical development is thorough and detailed. The expert use of experimental data demonstrates the deep knowledge of the authors...It is likely that this book will become one of the standard texts and with occasional updating could remain so for many years." Times Higher Education Supplement, Friday 27th November 1998
