About the Book

Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus is a language programme for upper juniors. The resources for each year are an Anthology, a Pupils' Book, a Teacher's Handbook and a CD-ROM (PC only). Work centres around the texts in the Anthologies, which contain a selection of complete poems, play scripts and non-fiction works. There are both newly-commissioned and previously published texts written by leading authors including: Michael Morpurgo, Roger McGough, Jeremy Strong, Geraldine McCaughrean, Pie Corbett, Adrian Bradbury, Louise Kuenzler and Gill Howell. Children are introduced to the text in a structured, teacher-led way, involving three readings of the text at increasing depth. A range of reading, writing, speaking and listening and drama activities develop understanding further. The 'Big Question' links the fiction and non-fiction elements, encouraging children to reason, debate and think critically about the texts they have just read. Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus uses the successful methods of Ruth Miskin's Read Write Inc. teaching pedagogy, including effective ideas for partner work and classroom management strategies. Speaking and listening is at the core of the programme and is integrated throughout. The programme is a perfect match to the renewed Framework. Text types have been chosen to support the PNS unit plans and writing support is also provided. The Teacher's Handbooks show clearly how Framework objectives for England and QCDA Assessment focuses are covered, and show links to the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish curricula. Please note that the CD is PC only.

She is the author of lively, age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction texts used in the Read Write Inc. Fresh Start Anthologies. Charlotte Raby is a primary teacher specialising in Literacy. Review :
`[Comments on Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus]: I must add how much I thought of the whole package. It all looks very exciting and I love the way the narrative 'knits' so well with the non-narrative yet takes it through to other parts of the curriculum.' Cuckoo Hall School `I thought the overall premise and focus for the programme really extensive and useful and could see this as a powerful way of integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as elements of drama and role play.' Springfield School `[Comments on Read Write Inc. pedagogy]: Read Write Inc. actually teaches children to read and write. We love using this programme because children achieve so much so quickly. They want to read and write. It's the best literacy programme we have ever known.' Lorna Jackson, Headteacher, Maryland Primary School `There are many dimensions to your programme that support teaching and learning.... The successful teaching that has been evident since September has had beneficial effects on learning and behaviour across the school.' Sue Watts, Furrow Community School. Channel 4 featured Ruth Miskin and the Read Write Inc. method being used in schools in a series of programmes broadcast in Autumn 2007 and Summer 2008. Read Write Inc. raised standards and turned struggling and non-readers into more confident and competent readers.
