About the Book

This is the first modern study of the production and circulation of manuscripts during the English Renaissance. H.R. Woudhuysen examines the relationship between manuscript and print, looks at people who lived by their pens, and surveys authorial and scribal manuscripts, paying particular attention to the copying of verse, plays, and scholarly works by hand. It investigates the professional production of manuscripts for sale by scribes such as Ralph Crane and Richard Robinson. The second part of the book examines Sir Philip Sydney's works in the context of Woudhuysen's research, discussing all Sidney's important manuscripts, and seeking to assess his part in the circulation of his works and his role in the promotion of a scribal culture. A detailed examination of the manuscripts and early prints of his poems, his Arcadias, and of Astrophil and Stella shed new light on their composition, evolution, and dissemination, as well as on Sidney's friends and admirers.

Review :
`erudite study ... for the most part, concerned with practices that are already documented for other periods, but offers a wealth of new evidence that substantially transforms our understanding of them ... Woudhuysen is able to offer a wealth of new insights into the nature and shaping of the manuscript book' Times Literary Supplement `Woudhuysen's learned and courageously unfashionable empirical book should do much to ensure that the field will remain productive for many years to come ... its users will be grateful both for the mass of factual information and for the range of speculative narratives in terms of which the author attempts to bring order to his gatherings.' John Gouws, Renaissance Quarterly `This unusual book will be of interest to a wider academic audience than the title might at first sight suggest ... Woudhuysen's work deserves to become widely known amongst historians as well as literary scholars ... He presents an enormously rich tableau of characters and information ... Since manuscripts are as significant for students of early-modern politics and political thought as they are to those of poetry or the legal profession, he provides an invaluable starting point for anyone wanting to find out more about this important, but hitherto neglected subject.'
