About the Book

This is a critical edition of six twelfth-century surveys of the vast estates of Glastonbury Abbey, five of which are printed for the first time. They deal with both the monastic household and the Abbot's lordship as a tenant-in-chief. They throw much light on the changing methods by which he exploited the resources of his demesne manors, and provide evidence of how the services and holdings of the peasantry were affected by a rising population. The introduction explains the contemporary context of surveys - documents which are of fundamental importance for the economic, social, and monastic history of twelfth-century England.

Review :
Dr Neil Stacy's edition of these twelfth-century surveys at last makes this very important material available to a wide readership. English Historical Review In short, this volume upholds the high standards established by previous volumes in the series, and makes a significant contribution to the history of both Glastonbury Abbey and twelfth-century England. Journal of the Society of Archivists This is a volume that will be of the most value to specialists who have mastered the large secondary literature on the Glastonbury estates. On the editing of the texts themsleves it is in every way exemplary. The texts are copiously footnoted, with cross-references between the various texts and the introduction. The reader is also aided by a glossary of unusual words, which are also included in a separate subject index. Journal of the Society of Archivists A welcome edition of the Latin texts of all the estate surveys up to 1201, with an authoritative introduction discussing the source of the texts, the way in which the estates were managed and the different types of tenure, rent and other customary payment that the surveys record. Journal of Ecclesiastical History
