About the Book

The lower ecclesiastical courts were among the most important law courts that ordinary English people encountered in the Middle Ages. These courts dispensed the justice of medieval canon law in its criminal guise, punishing people for illicit sexual activity and other breaches of Christian codes of conduct, as well as overseeing inheritance via last will and testament. The records of these courts are few and fragmentary compared with secular courts of the period. This volume presents scholarly editions of two of the most important examples, for the benefit of those who are not specialists in legal history. The introduction, which explains the origins and nature of this kind of jurisdiction and describes the procedures followed in it, reveals why these neglected documents are an important source for social historians.

Review :
The records of medieval England's ecclesiastical courts are potentially among the most important mirrors of pre-Reformation life. They can also be highly frustrating and unrewarding; so it is perhaps no surprise that few have so far been made available in print. Nevertheless, slowly - very slowly - their riches are being revealed. Edited by Larry Poos, this volume discloses the riches and the idiosyncrasies of such material. Lincolnshire History & Archaeology This is a very well-produced volume that will help make interesting but often unknown sources available to scholars. The quality of the edition means that it is suitable for scholarly work. The Medieval Review Larry Poos has done many people a great service by publishing the Lower Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction in Late-Medieval England. This volume not only makes available to scholars important original sources, but the strong introduction helps those unfamiliar with these records to make sense of them. The Medieval Review This volume provides the ecclesiastical historian with rich evidence of how the canon law was enforced upon the medieval laity but also of the active part played by the laity in their capacity as parishioners; it is also of great interest for legal, social, and economic historians. Journal of Theological Studies This volume is a monumental one and it adds to our ever growing understanding of the ecclesiastical courts. English Historical Review
