About the Book

This edition presents several Old English texts from an Oxford manuscript. The works are unique to this manuscript and have not been edited since 1909, when only a text and translation were supplied. Four of the texts are by the 10th-century writer Aelfric; the other three are anonymous. The edition offers detailed information about the manuscript, its language and the background, sources and analogues of the individual works.

Review :
a very fine work, bringing these texts to the attention of scholars in a very full, helpful edition, which will be most welcome to all those working in Old English. Irvine's treatment is a clear distillation of intricate matter, admirable in summarizing those things needful to know, particularly about Aelfric and the various authorial and scribal versions of his works. The undoubted strength of this strong edition, however, is the treatment of the seven individual pieces. Irvine's edition is yet another indication that Old English prose has moved from second-class status in Old English studies to the prominence it deserves in scholarly inquiry. In turn, the edition will likely inspire further research, sustained as those efforts should be by the example of this excellent work. Susan Irvine's new edition of seven of the Belfour pieces ... is greatly to be welcomed. ... In it we have a much improved text, better laid out and punctuated, and cleansed of Belfour's occasional inaccuracies and the apparently meaningless but very frequent acute accents with which the manuscript text is sprinkled ... this edition is a model of exactitude and responsible scholarship.
