About the Book

This volume comprises twenty-eight of the finest oratorio choruses, complete short choral works, and movements from masses or requiems from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. Drawing repertoire from Britain and mainland Europe, the volume features renowned choruses and familiar cornerstones of the repertoire, as well as some choral discoveries, all in new, carefully researched, and practical editions. Playable piano reductions for rehearsal use are included in the main volume, with a separate volume of purpose-made three-stave organ accompaniments, and newly typeset orchestral material available on rental. Intended for choral societies and cathedral, church, and concert choirs, this is a unique collection of choral classics for mixed voices and orchestra, and an invaluable practical addition to any choir's library.

About the Author :
John Rutter studied music at Clare College, Cambridge and first came to notice as a composer and arranger of Christmas carols and other choral pieces during those early years; today his compositions, including such concert-length works as Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, The Gift of Life, and Visions are performed around the world. John edits the Oxford Choral Classics series, and, with Sir David Willcocks, co-edited four volumes of Carols for Choirs. In 1983 he formed his own choir The Cambridge Singers, with whom he has made numerous recordings on the Collegium Records label, and he appears regularly in several countries as a guest conductor and choral ambassador. John holds a Lambeth Doctorate in Music, and was awarded a CBE for services to music in 2007.

Review :
Rutter has freshly edited all scores, including providing new keyboard accompaniments that are frequently more idiomatic and tailored to rehearsal purposes than older editions . . . Throughout the anthology, musical layout is commodious and easy to read. Rutter also provided an engaging introduction for the collection and commentary for each individual piece. Perhaps the most practical and attractive aspect of this edition is the parallel accompaniment volume which is specifically designed for organ performance. The over-sized score is spiral bound for durability and practicality on the organ music rack, and the organ parts are notated in three staves throughout . . . The accompaniments are indeed remarkably idiomatic and enjoyable to play . . . Many [items] can successfully be accompanied by a full-size organ with pedals, and a separate organ book with vocal cues (whose turned pages remain turned!) can be purchased - a very welcome feature of this collection . . . Like the editor, I hope that this volume helps to make pieces like Schubert's Magnificat and Vivaldi's exuberant In exitu better known. This is a remarkable collection . . . All are freshly edited from original sources and many have new English singing translations. With 380 pages and strong sewn binding the volume is excellent value for money . . . Rather than compromise in the keyboard accompaniments, those in the vocal score are for piano and for rehearsal, while, and this is wonderful for organists, an accompanying, large, wiro-bound organ volume provides three-stave organ accompaniments for all except four of the pieces. Overall, the selection and presentation is at least as much for church and cathedral use as for secular choirs.
