About the Book

Wittgenstein's Nachlass: The Bergen Electronic Edition is the only CD-ROM to give you instant facsimile and text access to the 20,000 pages of the philosopher's Nachlass as catalogued by Professor von Wright in his 1982 publication The Wittgenstein Papers. The result of 10 years of academic research and editorial work by the Wittgenstein Archives at the University of Bergen this electronic edition is the first scholarly resource to apply a uniform, well-documented, consistent set of editorial principles to the writings. The CD-ROM is a joint publication between Oxford University Press and the Wittgenstein Archives and is published in Text & Facsimile and Text Only formats. ACCURATE, ON SCREEN TEXT The CD-ROM edition allows the original manuscripts to be represented as accurately as possible on screen. All underlining, deletions, overwriting, marginal notes, and marks are captured in the transcriptions by using symbols and coloured text so you can see where Wittgenstein revised and rearranged his work, moved or removed sentences and sections and inserted new ones. The facsimiles for the CD-ROM have been produced by photographing the original manuscripts, transferring them to photo CD format, and compressing the resulting image files. The CD-ROM has been divided into 4 sections: Introduction Lists an overview of all manuscripts, typescripts, and dictations included in the CD-ROM (including details of editorial decisions and conventions used), a key to the text mark up and any coded text. Diplomatic text Replicates the structure of Wittgenstein's text as closely as possible and includes his original text mark up and any coded text. Normalized text Incorporates Wittgenstein's amendments and is intended as a fully readable version with editorial corrections of, say, spelling mistakes. Index A list by manuscript number of every page of text. Here the item numbers correspond to manuscript numbers as given by von Wright in The Wittgenstein Papers. You can move to any page of the manuscript by double-clicking on its index entry and going to the diplomatic or normalized text or to the facsimile of the required page. SEARCHING The CD-ROM allows you to restrict your search to an individual section (introduction, diplomatic text, normalized text, index) or to search across all sections. Searches include: o Volume and title o Manuscript date o Personal names o Group searches - eg for type of text (manuscript, typescript etc) o Proximity and wildcard searches (in the full text and language indexes only) o English, French, and Latin words (in the normalized text) You can also browse graphics or equations contained within the text and Wittgenstein's coded text. FACSIMILES The photographs available for every page of text can be studied using the external image viewer, allowing you to zoom in or rotate the manuscripts to see them in greater detail, and to view them as documents, or in actual size. You can also browse the textual images and print them as required. Other features Trail: this facility shows which text and photographs you have looked at within a session Back-track: takes you back through your recent searches Tile windows: enables you to view two different manuscripts (from the same section), or to compare normal and diplomatic text for the same manuscript Displaying search results: you can choose to display your search results in context using the Table of Contents Saving: you can save bookmarks, personal notes, or amendments to the manuscripts whilst ensuring that the originals remain intact Bookmarks: you can mark any part of text and save it as a bookmark to retrieve later Printing: you can print selections or views of any manuscript. Wittgenstein's Nachlass: The Bergen Electronic Edition is an ideal resource for academics, philosophy students, and university libraries, bringing together original manuscripts, unrivalled scholarship, and the advantages of CD-ROM technology.

Review :
The advent of the Bergen edition will prove to be an indispensable means for philosophically sensitive scholars to draw a new and more useful picture of Wittgenstein's development. ...The whole Wittgenstein world will be grateful to those who have collaborated on and succeeded in producing this splendid tool for future work. Joachim Schulte, Universitat Bielefeld, Grazer Philosophische Studien The work should assist us enormously ... It is an edition, if that is the right term, produced ... for the use of other editors, or at any rate other scholars. It is not raw material, but not finished either: rough hewn, for future use. One use to which it can be put is that of resurrecting versions of works that Wittgenstein abandoned or superseded The Wittgenstein Archives at Bergen, and Oxford University Press ... are much to be congratulated for the conception as well as the execution. Springer's Vienna edition (of books) resulted in an interminable series of elegant editions: to consult them you need a whole series of coffee tables. Here you need only a PC ... and you have the whole Nachlass.' Brian McGuinness, Times Literary Supplement
