About the Book

The value of breastfeeding the human infant is self-apparent. It has been adapted over milennia to the needs of the species for nutrition, protection against infection, child spacing, and mother-baby attachment. This book is concerned with programmes to promote breastfeeding, including relatively small-scale programmes, usually initiated by concerned health professionals in hospitals, as well as the role of breastfeeding organizations and mothers' support groups. Experts from different parts of the world give accounts of programmes in their own countries, including the influence of the health services, training people to help mothers to breastfeed, practical management, surveillance of the marketing of infant formulas, and legislation and services for mothers at work. Finally there is an assessment of policy needs and strategies for the development of future programmes. Paediatricians, nursing mothers groups, nurses, public health administrators, and international health workers and agencies.
