Career Pathways: From School to Retirement brings together leading workforce researchers and practitioners to provide new perspectives on school-to-work and workplace career pathways. This groundbreaking book explains the transformations that have taken place in the workplace over the past several decades and how those transformations have combined to produce a dramatically different career landscape. It highlights the important role of career pathways as a framework for workforce and economic development within this quickly evolving career landscape. Bringing together top figures in the field, this volume addresses a wide variety of critically important career pathway topics such as the role of apprenticeships in career pathways, the gig economy and emerging career pathways, career crafting, the role of data analytics in providing career and workforce insights, and career pathways for late career workers. Review :
"Given the changing nature and organization of work, the career experiences of workers have evolved dramatically in the past several decades. This book provides readers with a comprehensive framework based on career pathways to understand these career experiences. Incorporating an employer perspective, it also offers insights for strengthening employment relationships and human capital management. It is a 'must read' for students, researchers, organizational practitioners, and policy makers in the fields of career education and workforce development." -- Mo Wang, Lanzillotti-McKethan Eminent Scholar Chair, Warrington College of Business, University of Florida "With the rapid changes that have occurred across the world of work--and the many more that are sure to come--the notion of clear and predictable career paths has been left by the wayside for organizations and employees. Jerry Hedge and Gary Carter have assembled a diverse group of authors to address this timely topic, drawing linkages across workforce education, organizations, and employees, and providing research insights and best practices to advance and align our thinking on career pathways." -- David H. Oliver, Vice President, Talent Management and Development, PepsiCo Foods North America "A thoroughly enjoyable compendium that bridges research and insights on career pathways across educational, individual, and organizational development perspectives in the face of societal changes and technological advancements. It offers rich and up-to-date scientific knowledge, inspiring insights, and illustrative case studies appealing to scientists and students of the careers literature, but also to educators, HR professionals, and consultants." -- Ute-Christine Klehe, Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen
