About the Book

Revised for increased readability and streamlined for clarity, this text is designed to accompany an introductory college-level course in oceanography. This insightful, ecologically sensitive presentation of the relationship of scientific principles to ocean phenomena is made even more relevant to a new generation of teachers and students by pairing new co-author Alan Trujillo with renowned author Harold V. Thurman. *NEW - A new coauthor: - With Thurman's retirement from teaching, Alan Trujillo of Palomar College has been added as co-author for this edition. Alan's ideas and approach will help make this edition as relevant to a new generation of teachers and students as previous editions were to Thurman's contemporaries. *NEW - Changes in chapter organization: - A new Chapter 1, Introduction to Planet Earth, replaces the old Chapter 1 (History of Oceanography). The historical perspective is now included as chapter-opening feature boxes which highlight important events in oceanographic history relevant to chapter-specific material. - New placement of the chapter on plate tectonics (switched with the chapter on sea floor features) ensures that the processes of plate tectonics can be fully used to explain the origin of various sea floor features. - Content previously in Chapter 2, 'The Ocean: Its Origin and Provinces' has been moved to Chapter 3, 'Marine Provinces'. *NEW - A new feature called 'Students Sometimes Ask...' presents actual student questions along with author responses now to be found at the end of each chapter. *NEW - One to three boxes containing newsworthy features related to the chapter content have been added to each chapter to increase student interest. Current boxes include: - 'Running Shoes as Drift Meters: Just Do It' , which describes how 30,000 pairs of Nike brand shoes were lost from containers that went overboard in a 1990 North Pacific storm and provided information crucial to testing computer models of ocean water circulation in the North Pacific Ocean. - 'The Voyage of the Fram' , which details the 1893-96 voyage of the Norwegian ship that attempted to reach the North Pole by trapping itself in sea ice and ultimately marked the beginning of major advances in the knowledge of physical motions of the ocean with new instruments. *NEW - Pedagogical enhancements to foster student understanding: - Notations of key terms with bold print, which are defined when they are introduced and are included in the glossary. - More extensive use of etymons (word origins) to explain the origin of newly introduced terms. For example, Lithogenous (lithos = stone, generare = to produce). - Continued refinement of style and clarity of writing. (Example: Coriolis effect in Chapter 6). *NEW - Expanded use of full-color format with over 100 new line drawings and photographs; many other line drawings have also been revised. *Carl Woeses newly confirmed three domains of life are incorporated into the classification of organisms. They are Bacteria, Archaea (new), and Eukarya. Examples: Chapter 12 - Classification of Living Things and Chapter 15 - Deep-Sea Hydrotherma; Vent Biocommunities. *Carl Woese's newly confirmed three domains of life are incorporated into the classification of organisms *Uses the international metric system (SI) of units throughout
