About the Book

Examining the phenomenon of commonsense reasoning, this book opens with coverage of a logic of nonmonotonic reasoning about what "typically is the case". The author proposes a logic which is based on reasoning about typicality (called typicality logic), and applies it to the solution of the anomalous extension problem and to the formalization of the notion of prototypical objects. The relationship between typicality logic and other default logics is explored and it is proved that four well known default logics are special cases of the typicality logic. A formal account of causal reasoning is presented, using the apparatus of the typicality logic, and a logic of reasoning about action (scripts and frames logic) is introduced. The way in which scripts and frames logic can be applied to the solution of the persistence problem and to areas of effective planning, analogical problem solving, and causal and intentional reasoning is discussed in detail. The scripts and frames logic is also proved to be a specialization of the typicality logic. Finally, a novel formalism developed by the author and called "infodynamics" is presented, examining logic and information from a physical point of view. A case study is provided, from a real life situation, which utilizes all the theories of commonsense used in the book. Two further topics are also covered: a critique of Aritficial Intelligence from a marketing point of view, and a quick and thorough survey of theories for commonsense reasoning, nonmonotonicity and reasoning about action.

Table of Contents:
Artificial intelligence from a marketing perspective; theories of commonsense reasoning; the typicality logic for nonmonotonic logic; theoretical investigations on the typicality logic; a nonmonotonic theory of causation; reasoning about action; theories of action based on the scripts and frames logic; infodynamics - towards a physical theory of knowledge and information.
