About the Book

The problem of producing drugs with a high level of stability is the subject of this volume, which is part of a series designed to reflect new advances in pharmaceutical chemical discoveries. It contains a series of essays by international researchers who present a range of topical issues. Starting with a review of the value of cyclodextrins in pharmaceutical technology, the text shows how the stability of this group of compounds may be increased by the inclusion of other molecular compounds, thus increasing resistance towards heat and lowering thermal resistance. Transitions are observed in differential thermal analysis and electrical conductivity, and the potential of these methods to produce different drug forms during freeze drying is analyzed. The use of colloidal and porous silicas as carriers in solid, semi-solid and liquid dose forms is also examined. There is a review of silica gel production systems, which are of interest to the ceramics industry for high purity silicate glass production as well as the pharmaceutical chemist, due to their low temperature processing capacity. The advantages of soft paraffin - widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulation - are described, as well as the advantages, in terms of selectivity, time saving and economy, of using short and ultra-short HPLC columns for the analysis of compounds.

Table of Contents:
Cyclodextrins - their value in pharmaceutical technology; stabilization of local anaesthetics in liposomes; processing factors in the stability of freeze dried sodium ethacrynate; the stability of drug adsorbates onto silica; a novel series of silica gels - preliminary investigation; microstructural changes during the storage of systems containing cetostearyl alcohol/polyoxyethylene alkyl ether surfactants; structural stability of ophthalmic ointments containing soft paraffin; the use of oscillatory rheological techniques to quantify the flow behaviour of polyelectrolyte systems; advantages of the use of very short and ultra-short HPLC columns for drug analysis; dissolution of chlorpropamide tablets in a methanol-water binary solvent system; pH measurements of suspensions; control of crystal growth in drug suspension; water vapour interaction with pharmaceutical cellulose powders; determination of dielectric properties and absorption isotherms of water adsorbed on to Fractosil 5000.
