About the Book

This text focuses on building linear statistical models and on developing skills for implementing regression analysis in real life situations. The fifth edition now includes applications for engineering, sociology, psychology, etc., as well as traditional business applications. The authors use material from news articles, magazines, professional journals, and actual consulting problems to illustrate real business problems and how to solve them by using the tools of regression analysis.* Readability - In this teaching (rather than a reference) text, the authors explain concepts in a logical, intuitive manner that uses worked examples. * Emphasis on model building - Treated in-depth in Chapters 4-7 and emphasized throughout, appropriate statistical models are examined. Model building is considered fundamental to any regression analysis. * Emphasis on developing skills to use regression analysis - In addition to teaching basic regression analysis methods, the text stresses using regression analysis as a tool in solving problems. Another major objective of the text is to develop skill in applying regression analysis to real-life situations. * Numerous examples and exercises based on real data - The text contains many worked examples that illustrate important aspects of model construction, data analysis, and the interpretation of results. Numerous exercises based on data and problems extracted from news articles, magazines, and journals are located at the ends of key sections and at the ends of chapters. * Case study chapters - Five case study chapters (Chs. 12- 16), address real-life problems, allowing students to experience how regression analysis is used to answer through questions a process that begins with building a statistical model and ends with interpreting sample data. * Data sets - Four complete data sets accompany the case studies, and encourage further practice with model building and data analysis. Data sets are also available on disk. * Computer integration - Tutorials on SAS, SPSS, ASP, and MINITAB are featured in Appendix C. The printouts of the respective packages are presented and discussed throughout the text.
