About the Book

Short, concise, and easily-accessible, this text uses the 8085A microprocessor and 8051 microcontroller to explain the fundamentals of microprocessor architecture, programming, and hardware. It features only practical, workable designs so that students can develop a complete understanding of the application - with no frustrating gaps in the explanations. An abundance of real-life hardware, software, and schematic interpretation problems prepare students to troubleshoot and trace signals through situations they will likely encounter on the job. *Each chapter first presents the theory required to understand a particular piece of hardware circuitry or software instruction, then provides a completely-explained example of the theorys application. - Most of the examples and applications involve some kind of Input/Output with electronic devices such as switches, sensors, analog converters, and displays. This ties together digital electronic theory with the hardware/software requirements (I/O protocol and timing analysis) needed to interface with the outside world via the most commonly used microprocessor support ICs. *Features three types of problems in each chapter: - Hardware. - Software. - Schematic Interpretation problems that will give students experience troubleshooting and tracing signals through complex schematic diagrams similar to those that they will find on the job. *Features two chapters (chapters 5 and 6) that help students develop solutions to a complete application of a microprocessor-based system performing a task which is both practical and visually stimulating, e.g.: - Generating waveforms with a DAC. - Measuring temperature with an ADC. - Driving a multiplexed display. - Reading a keyboard. - Driving a stepper motor. *Uses a clear, concise, easy-to-read writing style throughout. *Allows the use of any 8080/8085A trainer. *Presents all programs and system design applications as a complete package ? completely explained with all required hardware and software, so that they can be duplicated in a lab. *Introduces the software instruction set as needed, to solve a particular design application. *Each chapter includes Objectives, Introduction, Summary, and Glossary. *Balanced coverage of hardware and software. *Appendix I provides the complete details for building an 8051-based data acquisition and control system for measuring temperature and light and for driving a variable speed motor. This appendix is included as a supplement to Chapter 6.
