About the Author :
Peter Stafford has been involved with herpetological field research in Belize since 1988, where much of his work has focused on the little known Maya Mountains. His principal interest concerns the natural history of reptiles, particularly snakes. He has written widely on the subject of herpetology, including several scientific papers and a recently co-authored book on Neutropical boas, and serves as a council member of the British Herpetological Society. His studies in Belize are ongoing. John Meyer is a research herpetologist and biogeographer who has a long-standing affiliation with Central American herpetology. Among his numerous publications he is credited with having written many scientific papers on Mexican and Central American reptiles and amphibians. He co-authored the comprehensive Snakes of Honduras, and is co-author of a recently published Guide to the Frogs and Toads of Belize. He currently coordinates the Maya Forest Anuran Monitoring Project (MAYAMON) in this region.

Review :
"As a practical field guide the book more than lives up to its title and is a must for any biologist visiting Central America. It will also serve as a significant resource to support biodiversity assessment and conservation programs." -BIOLOGICAL CONSERVATION (June 2001) "Stafford and Meyers have produced an excellent general guide to the reptiles of Belize. ...We hope and strongly recommend that Belizean natural history guides, resort owners who cater to natural history tours, and student group leaders buy and use this book." --HERPETOLOGICAL REVIEW (2001) "The strength of the book is its design for ease of use in the field. It provides the kind of information that a visitor to Belize who is unfamiliar with the local herpetofauna would want. ...Those interested in the natural history of reptiles in Central America will want this volume as will those desiring a convenient reference for use during excursions to Belize. --COPEIA (2001) "This book contains useful identification keys, diagrams, illustrations, and color photographs of each species. This is a guide for the backpack or even back pocket and one that is an indispensable resource as a herpetological reference, and for anyone traveling to Belize, southern Mexico, Guatemala, or other countries in northern Central America." --Charles E. Keller in INDIANA AUDUBON QUARTERLY (August 2000) "A book that serves both as a standard reference and a field companion." --NORTHEASTERN NATURALIST (2000)
