About the Book

Over the past decade unprecedented growth has occurred in the application of monolayer research to areas as diverse as chemical sensors and nonlinear optics. This growth is well-documented in a wide spectrum of literature reviews, and the trend is paralleled by the appearance of monolayer articles in an increasingly disparate range and growing number of journals. The Langmuir-Blodgett film technique (used to test spread monolayers at the air-water interface) has many applications. The variety of compounds that can be identified testifies to the diversity of the process, and these compounds constitute good model systems in which to investigate membrane related processes. Unfortunately, the characteristics of spread monolayers are often difficult to predict and may be dramatically altered by seemingly subtle changes in surfactant structure. The Handbook of Monolayers is the first and only book to feature a compilation of critical papers characterizing more than 1,300 compounds. This exhaustive two-volume compendium will take much of the trial and error out of the early stages of spread-and-transferred monolayer research. Each compound is listed by category and sub-category. The described subcategories include all divisions that contain monolayer-forming-substances. The common name of the compound (when appropriate) and the proper systematic name, along with the structure and molecular formula is given and cross-indexed. The best isotherm is described in detail. The book also features a list of all available references to the use of the compound, grouped by the extent to which helpful information is presented. The various experimental techniques that have been applied are listed in a separate index and appendix. A reliable and increasingly essential source of information on the monolayer characteristics of surface active compounds, this text will provide valuable assistance to researchers planning work in this area as well as those concerned with relating monolayer behaviour to molecular structure. This two-volume set is a compilation of more than 1300 compounds studied in monolayer research between 1980 and 1990. Each compound is identified by common and systematic (IUPAC) names, molecular structure, and formula. The organisation of each volume allows for easy cross-referencing and comparisons of thermodynamic behaviour of similar and dissimilar compounds. The best isotherm (measure of analysing a compound) and all available references to the use of the compound are listed. The various experimental techniques that have been applied are also provided. This volume is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in this expanding field.

Table of Contents:
Fatty compounds; phospholipids; macrocyclic compounds; inorganic compounds; dyes; polymers; steroids; amino acids and polypeptides; other natural products.
