About the Book

There now seems little doubt that solar cells are destined to play a significant role in the provision of future electricity supplies, even though their rate of introduction is slower than suggested by early optimistic estimates. This book is the first in a new treatise which aims to present comprehensive, specialist reviews of major areas in the field of photovoltaics. Each chapter gives an up-to-date assessment of the topic including advances in research and applications, and comments on the potential of, and limitations associated with, a particular type of cell.It will interest researchers in all branches of photovoltaics as well as materials scientists, electrical engineers, and anyone studying new energy sources and systems.FROM THE PREFACE: The policy of support for 'alternative energies', and specifically for research and development in energy technologies, contains many inconsistencies. In responding to the current lower price of oil, both governments and industry have in many but not all cases sharply reduced support for alternative energy programmes. In the United States particularly major budget cuts have been made since 1980. However, in the long run alternative energy sources will be very much needed. Now, before any future energy crisis, we should be developing them. The editors trust that this publication will perform a service in this regard. This first volume of Current Topics in Photovoltaics contains five chapters, all addressing currently important topics in the field. Chapter 1 by Fonash and Rothwarf deals with theoretical aspects of heterojunctions....Chapter 2 by Kazmerski and Wagner deals with solar cells based on the Cu-ternary compounds and, in particular, with CuInSe2....Chapter 3 is by Hamakawa and deals with a-Si: H-based solar cells, arguably the most promising of all solar cell candidates....Chapter 4 by Fraas is concerned with high-efficiency concentrator systems, believed by many to be the really outstanding prospect for the future....The final chapter of this volume, by Hill and Meakin, concerns the extensively investigated CdS/Cu2S cell...
