About the Book

This starter kit has been developed as part of the Home Office Police Research Award Scheme designed to stimulate new ideas from individuals within the police service. It describes a simple computer system called Survey Plus that has been adapted to provide information about the general public's concerns relating to crime in their home neighbourhood. The system achieves this by capturing responses to a carefully prepared questionnaire. The handbook also explains the reasons behind the study that led to the development of the system, and provides some information about the questions themselves, the method to adopt when conducting the survey, and the ways in which the results might be analyzed and interpreted. A disk containing Survey Plus Software for Analysing Fear of Crime Surveys is included, as well as loose questionnaire sheets.

Table of Contents:
Chapter One - Introduction; Chapter Two - Examines the phenomenon known as "fear of crime" and explores the direct correlation between fear and increasing levels of crime; Chapter Three - Explains the background to the questions found in the questionnaire; Chapter Four - Makes suggestions as to how the survey should be conducted in order to achieve realistic and unbiased results; Chapter Five - Explains how to use the computer system to accumulate the survey results; Chapter Six - Shows how the computer system can provide a number of very useful analyses of the data; Chapter Seven - Examines the ways in which the results of the survey might be analysed to the overall benefit of policing in a particular area; Chapter Eight - Provides a conclusion to the Fear of Crime Handbook, and supplies details of contacts for further information.
