About the Book

The work contains 15 papers which deal with the dynamics or the effects of dynamics in the Earth's middle atmosphere. Data is presented for all altitude layers between the troposphere and the lower thermosphere using ground-based, balloon-borne, rocket-borne and satellite experiments. Initial results from the CRISTA instrument of the Space Shuttle mission STS-66 are included which measured trace gas emissions from the middle atmosphere with very high spatial resolution in all three dimensions in order to derive dynamics parameters. Small and medium scale dynamics are included in models of the middle atmosphere which are presented in the theoretical papers. The book also reviews recent advances in optical techniques for remote sensing of the upper atmosphere. It includes: 12 papers selected from sessions on satellite and rocket experiments; ground-based optical observations; and laboratory measurements, spectral imaging and lidar remote sensing.

Table of Contents:
Horizontal and Vertical Small Scale Structures in the Middle Atmosphere . Preface (K.U. Grossmann, M. Riese). The GRAM model: status of development and future aspects (C.G. Justus, D.L. Johnson). Measurements of trace gases by the cryogenic infrared spectrometers and telescopes for the atmosphere (CRISTA) experiment (M. Riese et al .). CRISTA ozone measurements/validation (M. Bittner et al .). A model for atmospheric background radiance structures (J.H. Brown et al .). CFC11 measurements by CRISTA (R. Spang et al .). Evidence for a zonally trapped diurnal tide in CRISTA temperatures (P. Preusse et al .). Thermospheric nitric oxide infrared emissions measured by CRISTA (K.U. Grossmann et al .). Advances in Optical Remote Sensing of the Upper Atmosphere . Preface (B.R. Clemesha). Calibration and preparation of San Marco 5/ASSI data (K. Enninghorst et al .). Remote sensing from the space shuttle and space station (A.L. Broadfoot). The Arizona airglow experiment as flown on four space-shuttle missions (D.J. Knecht et al .). Studies of the MLT region using the MU radar and simultaneous observations with OH spectrometer and other optical instruments (T. Nakamura et al .). Laboratory measurements required for upper atmospheric remote sensing of atomic oxygen (I.C. McDade). A review of advances in imaging techniques for measuring short period gravity waves in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (M.J. Taylor).
