About the Book

The aim of the International Heliospheric Study Group is to improve communication among scientists interested in the study of the 3-dimensional heliosphere, and particularly to encourage optimum use of data arriving from the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft in the distant heliosphere, and from Ulysses exploring the solar polar regions. The most recent meeting of the group was entitled "The Heliosphere during the Declining Solar Cycle" from which 45 papers are presented in full in this volume. Additionally, 16 abstracts are included within the appendix. This book is intended for space scientists, astronomers and astrophysicists.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Introductory lecture: expanding our knowledge of the heliosphere, D.E. Page. Part 2 Some manifestations of solar activity: high energetic solar proton flares on the declining phase of solar cycle 22, M.A.M. Shaltout; solar and geomagnetic disturbances during the declining phase of recent solar cycles, D.F. Webb. Part 3 The solar wind: recent observations of the solar wind in the outer heliosphere, A.J. Lazarus et al; solar wind plasma electron parameters based on aligned observations by ICE and Ulysses, J.L. Phillips et al. Part 4 Ion pick-up and anomalous cosmic rays: solar cycle dependence of the production of H+ pick-up ions in the inner heliosphere, D. Rucinski and M. Bzowski; variability of the neutral hydrogen density distribution due to solar cycle related effects, M. Bzowski and D. Rucinski. Part 5 Interplanetary magnetic field: magnetic observations during the recent declining phase of solar activity, E.J. Smith; ionosphere as a sensor of the heliosphere affecting the earth, R.A. Gulyaev and T.L. Gulyaeva. Part 6 Cosmic ray modulation: modulation of galactic cosmic ray particles observed on board the Ulysses spacecraft, B. Heber et al; the relationship between the galactic cosmic ray intensity and the sunspot distribution, G.A. Bazilevskaya et al; cosmic-ray long-term variations due to the solar activity for the 22nd solar cycle, L. Marmatsouri et al; modulation recovery of high energy electrons - Ulysses observations, C. Rastoin et al. Part 7 Co-rotating interaction regions: Ulysses energetic ion observations during the declining phase of solar cycle 22, T.R. Sanderson. Part 8 The heliospheric boundary: frequency drift of the VLF emissions generated by transient shocks near the heliopause, A. Czechowski; physical consequences from axisymmetric model of the solar wind interaction with supersonic interstellar gas flow, V.B. Baranov. Appendix - abstracts of talks for which no manuscript was received: radio emissions in the heliosphere, J.L. Bougeret; the influence of the energy loss near the solar wind termination shock on the thickness of the heliosheath, H.J. Fahr and S.V. Chalov; interpretation of Pioneer/Voyager cosmic ray intensities, J.P.L. Reinecke et al.
