About the Book

The 39 papers presented in this volume review the recent developments and results in the domain of global change research utilizing satellite data. A wide range of topics is covered such as the progress in spaceborne sensors and data systems, international and national programmes, studies of physical, chemical and biological aspects of Global Change research and use of satellite data in developing countries. The role of space data to support the emerging concept of Earth system monitoring through the GCOS, GOOS and GTOS (Global Climate/Ocean/Terrestrial Observing Systems) is emphasized throughout the volume.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Progress in space sensors and data systems for global change: mission to planet Earth, S.G. Tilford et al; the plans of the European space agency for Earth observation, P. Goldsmith and C.J. Readings; progress of Japan's Earth observation satellites, Y. Haruyama; IMG, interferometric measurement of greenhouse gases from space, T. Ogawa et al; the French programme in Earth observations from space, I. Revah; national satellite systems capabilities relevant to climate studies, A.V. Karpov; the current status of operational satellite products for climate studies, G. Ohring. Part 2 Radiation budget and cloud studies and enhanced greenhouse effect detection: global temperature monitoring from space, R.W. Spencer; radiation budget measurements for the eighties and nineties, G.L. Smith et al; the influence of clouds on Earth radiation budget - a regional study - the North Sea, F.H. Berger; remote sensing of cloud optical depth with AVHRR and ground-based observation, Da-ren Lu et al; simple method to estimate the surface radiation balance using METEOSAT images, A. Rimoczi-Paal et al; recalibration of the advanced very high resolution radiometer for climate change research, C.R.N. Rao et al; normalization of multi-annual global AVHRR reflectance data over land surfaces to common sun-target-sensor geometry, G.G. Gutman. Part 3 Global energy and water cycles: the global energy budget and satellite observations, T.H. Vonder Haar; assimilation of satellite data in models for energy and water cycle research, A.C. Lorenc; global scale observation of the Earth for climate studies, A. Chedin et al.
