About the Book

In the last decade and a half, "organics" have been a key concern in water quality research and treatment process development. Biologically originated organic materials, most notably humic substances and other decomposition products, can impair the aggregation of colloidal matter in the solids' removal stages of treatment plants. In contrast, new techniques of coagulation and co-precipitation can also improve the removal of specific organic compounds. The 288 peer-reviewed papers collected here, including the keynote overview paper, cover the major issues in organics treatment: oxidation and adsorption/filtration of organics, flocculation/coagulation processes, special aspects relating to algae and to biofilm processes. These proceedings, with their coverage of both advanced research and process developments, represent the expertise of the world's leading figures in the control of organic material in water and wastewater treatment. They should be of value to all scientists and engineers interested in organics control, whether from the perspective of fundamental research or of advanced process design.

Table of Contents:
Control of organic matter by coagulation and floc separation, M. Rebhun and M. Lurie; coagulation in drinking-water treatment - particles, organics and coagulants, J.K. Edzwald; effect of pre-ozonation on removal of organic matter during water treatment plant operations, M. Edwards et al; laboratory and full-scale plant studies of permanganate oxidation as an aid in coagulation, J. Ma and G. Li; preformed ferric hydroxide flocs as adsorbents of humic substances, G. Cathalifaud et al; fundamental behaviour of humic acid and kaolin in direct sand filtration of simulated natural surface water, K. Ebie and S. Amano; the fate of dissolved organics in water purification processes treating polluted raw water, H.H. Yeh and W.J. Huang; effect of pre-ozonation on organics removal by in-line direct filtration, J.E. Tobiason et al; characterization of submicrometre colloids in freshwaters - evidence for the bridging by organic structures, M. Filella et al; influence of dissolved organic matter on coagulation/flocculation of wastewater by alum, J. Fettig and H. Ratnaweera; ferric chloride coagulation for removal of dissolved organic matter and trihalomethane precursors, A. Amirtharajah et al; influence of algae and their exudates on removal of humic substances and optimal dose of coagulant, P. Dolejs; effects of adsorbed organic matter on size, structure and filterability of iron oxyhydroxide flocs, T.D. Waite et al; removal of dissolved hydrophobic and hydrophilic organic substances during coagulation/flocculation of surface waters, J.P. Croue et al; dual wavelength photometric dispersion analysis of coagulation and flocculation, Y. Matsui et al; removal of organic matter by physico-chemical mechanisms in wastewater treatment plants, M. Boller; a new sewage treatment system with fluidized pellet bed separator, T. Suzuki et al; precipitation and coagualtion of organic substances in bleachery effluents of pulp mills, S. Beulker and M. Jekel; removal of soluble and particulate organic material in municipal wastewater by a chemical flocculation and biofilm processes, Y. Watanabe et al; influence of algal species and cultivation conditions on algal removal in direct filtration, B. Petrusevski et al; comparison of polyferric sulphate with other coagulants for the removal of algae and algae-derived organic matter, J.-Q. Jiang et al; settling and coagulation of slender type diatoms, H. Konno; impact of suspended matter on drinking water production - the Fes, Morocco, case, M.T. Elmghari et al.
