About the Book

In the past five years the two major areas of cellular transformation and tumorigenesis, chemical and physical tumorigenesis on the one hand and the investigation of tumor viruses on the other, have undergone extraordinary unification. This is mainly due to the discovery that the mechanisms of transformation are closely related. In both cases agents act via a limited number of proto-oncogenes. This volume brings together reviews from both areas, giving exceptional insight into the past and future work that has been explained and stimulated by this new framework.

Table of Contents:
(partial) Metabolism of chemical carcinogens, A Dipple et al. DNA modification by chemical carcinogens, A M Jeffrey. Tumor promoters and cell transformation, L Diamond. Role of DNA lesions and repair in the transformation of human cells, V M Maher & J J McCor;ick. The induction and regulation of radiogenic transformation in vitro: cellular and molecular mechanisms, C Borek. The mechanism of cell transformation by SV40 and polyoma virus, C Basilico. Cellular transformation by adenoviruses, S J Flint. Cellular transformation by the herpesviruses and antiviral drugs, J-C Lin & J Pagano.;The role of hepaDNA viruses in hepatocellular carcinoma, W S Robinson et al. Transformation by feline retroviruses, C J Sherr. The fos gene, I M Verma & W R Graha;. Cellular transformation by avian viruses, D R Makowski et al. Cellular transformation by human T lymphotropic retroviruses, P S Sarin. The role of cellular oncogenes in cancers of nonviral etiology, M P Goldfarb. Index.
