About the Book

This guide is designed for application developers and Webmasters who are not familiar with ActiveX concepts, and who want to learn whether ActiveX is appropriate to their specific situation. ActiveX is Microsoft's dynamic content initiative for the Internet and the desktop. It is Microsoft's answer to Java. With Microsoft's domination of the desktop with Windows 95 and NT, and its strategy to make working on the desktop seamless, Web developers must become versed in Microsoft ActiveX technologies in order to remain competitive. This book is designed to bridge the gap between developers of Windows applications and Web pages by showing how the ActiveX tools, technologies and techniques merge the best aspects of both disciplines. The book shows developers how to use ActiveX to solve specific problems. It concentrates on the practical implementation of ActiveX. It is not intended as a comprehensive guide to either ActiveX or HTML authoring in general; instead, it shows how using the two together provides easy-to-deploy solutions to the shortfalls in both. The author uses a teach-by-example methdology that introduces new concepts, tools and solutions as they apply to building real-world applications. The contents of the CD-ROM include: developers' tools - Microsoft distributable tools, third-party tools; distributable ActiveX components; hypertext guides; and program and example source code.
