About the Book

Dogs may be man's best friend, but women actually account for 86 percent of owner attendance at dog training schools throughout the United States. There are a slew of training books on the market that promise techniques to train your dog to sit, heel, and fetch, but none discuss the fundamental needs, concerns, questions, and problems women have with their dogs. Research has proven that women have more difficulty controlling their dogs than do men. Women must also think about specific issues and have more reasons for getting a dog, i.e., protection, companionship, playmate for the kids. She must now think more seriously about which dogs are better to leave home all day while she as at work or which one requires a large amount of supervision. Single women who live alone in small spaces, must think first about the comfort and health of the dog they want and consider which breed is trained easily and happy in smaller spaces. Babette also covers stopping behavior that is only done to women: eating underwear, crotch sniffing, biting on the behind, excessive barking, jumping, nudging, leash breaking, door crashing, and dragged by leash (other training books do not cover these embarrassing actions). It is important that women, being more likely to ask for help with their dog, have their specific needs and challenges addressed. Woman's Best Friend will be the first book to speak to women from the most-prestigious female dog trainer out there. Topics include: Aggression, Choosing a family dog, Preparing and Training for a new baby, Living in apartments or small spaces, Considering women's lifestyles and the appropriate breed, Equipment useful to women that women don't know about, New commands that work for women (for instance, "stay" doesn't work for most women). Safety issues, First aid tips, including what to do when your dog is hurt and is bigger than you, Professional training and group information, and two Special Sections: In-depth look at the personalities of the best dogs for women and for those women looking to attract romance, Babette lists what types of people certain breeds attract.
