About the Book

Projected global expenditures on enterprise applications (ERP+SCM+CRM+B2B) will grow from approximately USD 100B in 2000 to over USD 250B in 2005. These projections have been made by industry analysts such as AMR Research, Plant-Wide Research and Gartner Group. Much of the growth will come from small- to mid-size firms who are not spending millions on new ERP systems but given today's current economic situation want to maximize what they already have. There are approximately 300,000 firms in the U.S. with between 25 to 500 employees. More and more of these small to medium-sized manufacturers are using ERP (enterprise resource planning) applications to run their businesses more effectively. ERP systems create an "enterprisewide" (companywide) transaction backbone and which integrate manufacturing, financial, and other systems. These firms have a limited number of executives (3 to 10) involved in running the company, and little internal expertise in information technology (IT). Supply Chain Management (SCM) emphasizes synchronizing supplies with demands and responding to change. ERP provides the tools to model various supply chain scenarios, from simple to complex. In many ways, the perspective of supply chain management has helped push the evolving scope of ERP applications. Their interest focuses on the basics of improved operations, and various approaches to best practices. They want a simple yet complete overview of ERP applications, with light coverage of the integrated accounting applications. They also want to evolve towards advanced manufacturing practices and appropriate IT applications - such as JIT/demand pull, supply chain management, and web applications. Many firms have implemented an ERP software package that has been designed for them but have a need for a book to educate themselves and their key staff to get the most out of their ERP system. Maximizing Your ERP would not only appeal to executives in small firms that recognize the need for improved systems but would also appeal to executives of larger firms with the same need for understanding ERP systems in order to improve their business practices. The author has also proposed writing an on-line study guide to be used by the MBA and graduate-level courses. This study guide could then also be customized to various large ERP corporations (Oracle, SAP, etc.)
