About the Book

Boating involves a great variety of disciplines, from seamanship to engine repair to boat maintenance. As a result, it has been impossible to find a single source for boating information - until now. The Practical Encyclopedia of Boating is a comprehensive encyclopedia of essential boating information. In 500 alphabetically arranged entries, John Vigor will cover virtually every aspect of pleasureboating, power and sail, from boat handling and seamanship to routine maintenance to navigation. Each topic is covered quickly and concisely, giving the average boater just the right amount of information to answer most questions and solve most problems. Many entries address questions that arise while underway - precautions to take in fog, which sail to reef first, or the most efficient maneuver to recover a person overboard. Many describe common do-it-yourself projects and routine boat maintenance - how to select and apply bottom paint, how to winterize a diesel, and how to maintain a teak deck. Some entries will deepen the reader's theoretical understanding - how radar works, how sails generate lift, and why some hulls plane while others don't. And still others will relate useful (and sometimes curious) nautical rules of thumb of the kind that made Vigor's Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge a success. How much sail area (in square feet) can the average person handle efficiently? How much of a line's absolute strength is lost when you tie a bowline? How far away is a storm when the thunder follows the lightning by 5 seconds? The Practical Encyclopedia of Boating will thus give the average boater sound guidance for practically every boating situation he or she will ever encounter. An extensive bibliography will point the way when a specific question is beyond the scope of the book. At the same time, Vigor's elegant prose and eccentric, low-key humor will produce a reference book that is also a pleasure to read. As with Practical Mariner's Book of Knowledge, Vigor will leaven the straight instructional content with an occasional entry that tends towards the esoteric or whimsical, and the alphabetical organization of the book will produce some surprising juxtapositions. After "Flotation Requirements for Ballasted Hulls," the next entry might address "Flotsam and Jetsam" - and the important differences between them. Likewise "Plankton" will discuss the nutritional value of plankton (it can keep you alive in a raft), and "Denaming" will describe the correct procedure for renaming a boat without incurring the wrath of the gods. The result will be an immensely useful reference in the cockpit or the boatyard - and a well-mannered encyclopedia that a boater of any experience level can wander through on a winter afternoon.
