About the Book

This book provides theoretically based but practically oriented guide to the use of therapeutic modalities for students in physical therapy programs. It is intended for use in courses where various clinically oriented techniques and methods are presented. Given its extensive use of case studies, marginal notes, and laboratory activities, this book will be primarily a textbook. But due to its comprehensive coverage - every modality that has any support in the primary literature is included - it has also made an outstanding reference for practicing physical therapists. The book addresses a wide range of modalities, from electrical to thermal to manual to light (laser) therapy. Each chapter discusses the physiological basis for use, clinical applications, specific techniques of application through the use of related laboratory activities, and relevant individual case studies. The book is rounded out with pedagogical aids, including objectives, glossary of key terms, references, and appendices containing trigger points in the body and a list of manufactures of modality equipment. The changes in the second edition will include: * Specific recommendations made by the reviewers for changes in technical information provided in certain chapters, including electrical stimulating currents, ultrasound and iontophoresis. * Complete updating of each chapter as a result of a thorough search and review of the newly published literature. * Improvement in pedagogical features such as rewriting the objectives, bringing consistency in the way margin definitions are handled, adding review questions at the end of each chapter, increasing the number 0 case studies and increasing treatment tips. * A new chapter addressing the physiological effects and benefits of each modality from a systems perspective. * Making the text more aesthetically appealing with a better cover and possibly the addition of a second color on the interior. * A CD-ROM containing very detailed series of power point presentations for each chapter which would be distributed by sales reps to course instructors who adopt the book.
