About the Book

When an elderly professor at Cambridge is murdered, a victim of bizarre, ancient Chinese torture, Alex Hawke teams up with his MI6 colleague and friend Ambrose Congreve to find the killer. But the death is only the opening move in a tense and lethal game of geopolitical brinksmanship.

In the United States the president has begun behaving strangely. Is his mental health deteriorating—or is there something far more sinister behind his questionable moves The answer is crucial, for tensions are mounting between China, North Korea and the U.S. A Chinese mega-yacht ferrying armed drones meant for a devastating terrorist attack is stopped in the nick of time. In the East China Sea, a North Korean patrol crew murdered four sailors on a U.S. Navy vessel. And now, China has launched fighter jets and a mega aircraft carrier vastly more sophisticated than any before—military technology superior to that which the U.S. and Great Britain possess.

With the situation rapidly deteriorating, Hawke must pull off his most daring mission yet: infiltrate the Chinese and neutralize the source of their advantage . . . or risk witnessing World War III.

Review :

"Hawke is a British-American MI6 counterterrorism operative...strong, shrewd and savvy, with an aplomb not seen since James Bond tore up the pages of Ian Fleming's novels. In other words, Bond, eat your heart out...there's a new spy in town.... Without a doubt Warlord stands tall...Definitely worth the time for all who love a first rate thriller." - NPR

"Ted Bell puts a capital A in adventure.... Warlord is old school spy cool.... Warlord will bowl you over with a level of excitement rarely read in today's spy novel. Commander Bond might choke on his martini next to Ted Bell's superlative Alex Hawke series." - Madison County Herald

"A James Bondish adventure brought up to date.... A meaty, entertaining thriller...just the thing for fans of Ludlum, Trevanian and Fleming." - Kirkus Reviews

"Bell's fine sixth thriller featuring swashbuckling British spy Alex Hawke mixes action and suspense with just the right amount of humor and old-fashioned boys-book adventure.... Thriller readers looking or an unabashed romp with a patriotic heart and a smart take on modern-day terrorism will be amply rewarded." - Publishers Weekly

"With a style that feels more like Trevanian than Ian Fleming (but is imitative of neither, the Hawke novels are full of danger and derringdo, but they're written in a light, breezy tone.... A thrilling adventure yarn that's a guaranteed winner." - Booklist

"Bell delivers larger-than-life characters full of élan and a threat that is both ingenious and convincing." - Library Journal on Tsar

"The sheer scope of this high-concept thriller, and the well-placed shocks throughout, make it Bell's best effort to date. A perfect tale for fans of plot-driven action-adventure and, especially, for the Cussler crowd." - Booklist on Warriors

"Alex Hawke is the new James Bond. Ted Bell is the new Clive Cussler." - James Patterson

"A secret agent who takes you into the danger zone with a ballsy wit that had me hooked." - Vince Flynn, bestselling author of The Last Man

"Ted Bell puts a capital A in adventure." - Madison County Herald

"Bell knows how to build a plot that moves at breakneck speed." - Richmond Times-Dispatch

"China seeks to rule the world in bestseller Bell's entertaining eighth novel featuring MI6 super-agent Alex Hawke . . . this is a thrilling ride." - Publishers Weekly

"Who is the most interesting man in the world? My vote for the title goes to Alex Hawke. On a first-name basis with Vladimir Putin and a personal friend of the Queen of England . . . Hawke has the biggest sailboat in the world, more money than God, and a skillset that enables him to walk through the valley of death without fearing evil because he is the deadliest S.O.B. in the valley. . . . Bell's work puts one in the mind of a collaboration between Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler, though his books are a bit more character-driven. But that is not to say that Phantom or any of his other novels lacks for action. There is plenty to make the heart race here." - Bookreporter.com on Phantom

"Near the end, a villain exclaims, 'Then bring me the head of Alexander Hawke!' Really, there's no need. When we finish enjoying Warriors, just bring us Hawke's next lively adventure." - Kirkus Reviews

"A thoroughly enjoyable spy novel . . . warm weather makes one want to dive into the summer beachside books and Ted Bell's Phantom is a great start." - Iron Mountain Daily News on Phantom

"I couldn't put it down." - Rush Limbaugh on Tsar

"[Hawke's] most personal mission yet. . . . the story is tense and exciting. A perfect read for Clive Cussler fans." - Booklist on Phantom

"A fiery tale of power and privilege, lusty and sinister intrigue, Hawke is a fast-paced adventure...truly an exciting read!" - Nelson DeMille on Hawke

"A terrific nonstop action tale . . . Gripping from the vivid Disney World disaster until the final confrontation with a brilliant Phantom." - The Mystery Gazette on Phantom

"Moves at breakneck speed." - Richmond Times-Dispatch on Spy

"Contains more action and interesting characters than most books do in three.... Bell easily could be considered the rightful heir to the throne of Robert Ludlum.... Pirate and its predecessors are unbeatable." - Bookreporter.com on Pirate

"A perfect summertime thriller." - Dallas Morning News on Assassin

"Rich, spellbinding, and absorbing.... Packed with surprises...great fun." - Clive Cussler on Hawke
