About the Book

A celebration of the career of the most successful Test cricket captain of all time. The epitome of ruthless aggression and dogged determination, Steve Waugh rewrote the record books by redefining how Test cricket was played in the nineties and transforming Australia into the No 1 team in the world. The 'Ice Man' retired from the game in January 2004 with a number of towering achievements: the second-highest Test run scorer, the second-greatest century-maker and cricket's most successful captain. Unwilling to give in to anything, Steve survived bouncers from Curtly Ambrose; he survived being dropped to make way for his twin brother's Test debut; he survived humiliating calls from sections of the press to retire; and he survived a dispiriting loss of form to turnaround the most talked about century in years. But there are many sides to Steve Waugh: cricketer, team leader, author, devoted family man, humanitarian. It is this very complexity that makes Steve such a fascinating individual. Through his bestselling tour diaries, Steve proved to be a humorous and devoted observer of people and events around him -- on and off the field. Writer Peter FitzSimons, who has formed a close bond with Waugh by following his career for over a decade, delves further into Waugh's character: from his childhood and early beginnings in the game, through his low-key entry into Test cricket, to the highs and lows of a record-breaking career -- as a player who scored 31 Test centuries and as a captain who led his country to successive World Cup and Ashes triumphs. Along the way, there are fresh interviews with some of the most influential cricketers in Australia, past and present -- the likes of Mark Taylor, Ian Healy, Glen McGrath, Mark Waugh and Shane Warne help recap the highlights of an illustrious career in international cricket and give us a rare insight into Steve's work for disadvantaged children in India. This book offers a special and unique perspective on the life and work of an Australian hero.
