About the Book

A teenage mother from the New York Projects wants to get to college – but she's got to learn to spell first… Raven's life has been derailed. She never expected she'd be a mother at sixteen like her best friend, Aisha. Is she going to be just another high school dropout, a project girl with few prospects? Could be – except Raven has ambition. Still, when is she going to find the time to finish school? In the few minutes she's not looking for a job or caring for her son, Smokey? Then her older sister Dell tells her about a spelling competition that promises the winner enrolment in a college preparatory programme and a scholarship for college itself. Spelling? It's Raven's worst subject. But Raven is determined to win, and so she starts memorising words. In Janet McDonald's powerful and funny novel, a smart and resilient young woman whose life isn't what she dreamed it would be learns that there are many ways to spell “success”.

About the Author :
Janet McDonald was born in New York City and grew up in a public housing project in Brooklyn, a place that has inspired many of the characters in her books. She holds degrees from Vassar, NYU and Columbia University. She is one of the few black members of Mensa and practises law in Paris.

Review :
"McDonald uses a chorus of highly authentic, lively young voices to convey heartbreaks and dreams reverberating in a Brooklyn ghetto... [Raven's] ability to turn her life around defies the notion that girls like her and Aisha are stuck on a dead-end street." Publisher's Weekly "One of the best of the many recent stories about teens in the city projects, this first novel is read-aloud funny, even as it tells the harsh truth about how hard it is to break free... Best of all, [McDonald] humanizes the individual people behind the stereotype of poor people who are 'project trash.'" Booklist, starred review "So real. So funny. So inspiring. Even if you can't relate to being a single mom in the projects (which I can cause I am) you'll be laughing so loud and rooting so hard that you'll forget you're not. This is my favorite book of all the teenage books I've read." amazon.com reader review
