He was formerly Director of the Department of Linguistics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig. His main inerests are language universals and typology, historical linguistics, linguistic fieldwork, and languages of New Guinea, the North Caucasus, and the Andaman Islands.
