Cette biographie d'Alfred de Musset, sérieuse et bien documentée, se lit aussi comme un roman. Alfred de Musset (1810-1857), enfant terrible du romantisme, a été considéré de son vivant comme un météore qui n'avait pas donné la pleine mesure de son talent. Pourtant à 30 ans, Musset avait publié des chefs-d'oeuvre sans que personne ne s'en soit vraiment aperçu ! Sa Confession d'un enfant du siècle parut en 1836 dans une sorte d'indifférence qu'on peut avoir du mal à s'expliquer aujourd'hui. Pourtant ce roman symbolise à merveille l'esprit de ce siècle. Quant à une partie de son oeuvre pour le théâtre, elle connut in extremis quelques succès de son vivant mais sans inciter ses contemporains à reconsidérer son oeuvre entière. Et pourtant, On ne badine pas avec l'amour, Les Caprices de Marianne et Lorenzaccio font partie des plus belles pièces du répertoire dramatique français. De ses premiers poèmes publiés à 18 ans à sa mort en 1857, à 47 ans, découvrez l'existence de cet écrivain romantique, ses amitiés, ses amours avec George Sand et Aimée d'Alton, ses espoirs et ses désilussions sur le monde qui l'entourait. Ne croyant ni vraiment en l'avenir de l'humanité ni vraiment en Dieu, Musset ne se raccrocha qu'à ce qui était pour lui la noblesse humaine: les sentiments et plus précisément l'amour, cette chose sainte et sublime comme le dit Perdican dans On ne badine pas avec l'amour. Le sentiment amoureux, avec ses souffrances et ses joies était, à ces yeux, le ressort de l'âme, le socle de la vie et de la création. La poésie chez moi est soeur de l'amour écrit-il à la veille de ses dix-sept ans. Il ne changera jamais. Sa vie et son oeuvre, variée et singulière, méritent d'être découvertes ou redécouvertes ne serait-ce que pour comprendre que Musset romantique appartient tout autant à son époque qu'à la nôtre.
