En 1926aparecio su primera novela, Aguas primaverales, y en ese mismo ano publicaba Fiesta. De regreso a los Estados Unidos, escribio otra novela de gran exito, Adios a las armas (1929), y el documento taurino Muerte en la tarde (1932). Otras obras suyas son Las verdes colinas de Cfrica (1935), Las nieves del Kilimanjaro (1936), Tener y no tener (1937), Por quien doblan las campanas (1940) y Al otro lado del rio y entre los arboles (1950). Con El viejo y el mar, obtuvo elPremio Pulitzer en 1953. En 1954 le fue concedido el Premio Nobel de Literatura. A su muerte dejo varios libros ineditos. En 1964 aparecio Paris era una fiesta, en 1967 se recogieron en el volumen Enviado especial sus principales articulos periodisticos, y posteriormente se dieron a conocer las novelas Islas a laderiva, El jardin del Eden y Al romper el alba.
