About the Author :
Charles Godfrey Leland was an American writer, humorist, and folklorist born on 15 August 1824 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He received his formal education at Princeton University and later continued his studies in Europe, an experience that significantly shaped his intellectual development and interest in languages and cultural traditions. Leland began his professional life working in journalism, a field that enabled him to travel extensively and observe diverse societies firsthand. These travels deepened his fascination with folklore, folk linguistics, and traditional belief systems, which became central to his literary and scholarly pursuits. His work reflects a strong commitment to collecting and preserving myths, legends, and oral traditions, particularly those connected to cultural identity and spiritual understanding. Through his writings, he explored how storytelling, language, and humor reveal shared human values and imaginative depth. Leland died on 20 March 1903 at the age of seventy eight in Florence, Italy. His place of burial is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, linking his legacy back to his birthplace.
