Fish is a superfood and is one of the best sources of quality animal proteins; besides, being a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially the omega-3 PUFAs EPA and DHA, and micronutrients. Blue revolution has made aquaculture one of the fastest growing food production sectors. The, Blue food and Blue economy holds a great promise for the future by providing food and nutritional security to the ever-growing world population. India being the most populous country in the world, there is a need for scaling-up of the fish production for ensuring nutrition security. After formation of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India has taken several new initiatives for boosting up the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a big step in that direction. It is now realized that entrepreneurial approach is needed for taking fisheries and aquaculture to industry scale'. Entrepreneurship is the ability and readiness to develop, organize and run a business enterprise, with all its uncertainties, to make it a profitable venture and the most prominent example of entrepreneurship is the starting of new businesses. It could be of any type; small business entrepreneurship, scalable start-up entrepreneurship, large company entrepreneurship, and social entrepreneurship. Keeping in view, the much desired need for entrepreneurship in fisheries and aquaculture, this book Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Fisheries and Aquaculture in India has been designed. About the Author :
Dr. B. P. Mohanty: Asst. DG (Inland Fisheries) ICAR since March 2020. MVSc (Biochemistry) from IVRI, Izatnagar and PhD from JNU, New Delhi. Started his career as Asst. Professor (Biochemistry) in OUAT, Bhubaneswar in Mar 1990. Joined ARS, ICAR in 1994. Served as Scientist, Senior Scientist, Principal Scientist and Head of Division at CIFRI, Barrackpore. Conferred Biotechnology Overseas Associateship Award (BTOA) by DBT, Government of India for advanced training in Proteomics. Published more than 100 research papers in journals of repute and has three Books, 10 Research Bulletins, two Open-access Database (NutriFishIN & FISHPROT) and one Mobile App (Nutrifish App) to his credit. Life Member and Fellow of prestigious scientific societies and academies. Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FNAAS), Zoological Society Kolkata (FZS), Inland Fisheries Society of India (FIFSI), Zoological Society of India (FZSI); Hon. Fellow of International Society for Ecological Communications (FISEC) and Life Member NASI Allahabad. Received Gold Medal from NAARM, Hyderabad; Zoological Society of India and OP Odum Gold Medal from FISEC & Lifetime Achievement Award in Biochemistry. Dr. Mohanty is currently the President of Society of Veterinary Biochemists and Biotechnologists of India (SVBBI).Dr. Shahaji Phand: Deputy Director and Centre Head of Centre for Extension in Agri-allied Sector and also Principal Coordinator, Agri-Clinics and Agribusiness Scheme (AC & ABC), National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad. He is veterinary graduate and completed Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B. V. Sc. A.H) degree in 2002 from Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Science University, Nagpur Maharashtra. He completed his Master and Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Extension Education from Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh in 2005 and 2008 with Junior and Senior Research Fellowship respectively. After completion of doctoral degree, he joined as Assistant Professor in Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University (NDVSU) in June 2008, promoted as Associate Professor in 2012 in same university. After serving 8 years as faculty in university, he joined as Assistant Director in MANAGE, Hyderabad in 2016 and promoted to post of Deputy Director in 2018. He has developed 02 technologies in the form of computer software's namely Animal Health Information System (AHIS) and Health Information System for Dairy Animal (HIS) as part his doctoral research, which is patented and commercialized. For this contribution he has been conferred with Dr. C.M. Singh Award for Best Ph. D Research at national level. He has published more than 30 research and review papers in national and international journal and edited of more than 27 books. He has been editor, reviewer and member of editorial board of national and international Journals. He has organized and coordinated more than 300 training programs for senior and middle level officers of State Department of Agriculture and Allied sector, Scientist, SAU faculties, Students etc. which benefit reached more than 4000 stakeholders. He has organized and participated national level conferences, seminar, workshop and contributed for policy formulation. As a Principal Coordinator, he is implementing Agri-Clinics and Agribusiness Scheme (AC&ABC) with the help of 126 Nodal Training Institute (NTIs) across the country, which have trained more than 7500 agricultural graduates and diploma holder, among which more than 3000 trained candidates have established their agri-venture in last two years and serving farming community.
Dr. Sushrirekha Das: presently working as MANAGE Fellow in extension in Agri-allied Centre, MANAGE, Hyderabad, India in the Fishery sector. She has completed her Graduation in Zoology as a topper from Swami Vivekanda Autonomous College, Jagatsinghpur, completed her M.Sc in Zoology with Specialization in Fisheries Science and did her Ph.D. in Zoology with research specialization in Fisheries Science. Her core research is in probiotics from Sriram Chandrabhanj Deo University, Mayurbhanj, Baripada, Odisha. She has put 3 Years of service in teaching as Zoology lecturer. She is having 5 years as Fishery extension officer. She is having more than 8 years of experience in the field of education, research and extension in aquaculture sector. She has submitted 15 numbers of genes to the NCBI Gen Bank. She has published patent in Probiotic rich fermented Amla (Embilica officinalis) fruits and a method of preparation thereof. She has developed 4 probiotics aquaculture products. She has guided 4 nos. of Master degree and graduate students, and handled one Research Projects in SERB, India. She has organized and coordinated more than 70 Workshops, Training Programmes on aquaculture and animal husbandry sector by MANAGE. She has trained more than 500 fish and Shrimp farmers of Odisha and other states through various funding agencies such as NFDB and MANAGE. She has coordinated 115 nos. of SCSP training program in the Fy- 2021-22, there are 4805 fishermen, fisher women, aquapreneurs, students and research scholars in PAN India. She has published more than 20 Research papers of National and International Repute and more than 8 popular articles. She has published 22 Chapters in different books. She has contributed as editor in 26 e-books in agricultural extension. She has received many prestigious Awards such as Young Scientist Award, Best poster/oral presentation Award, Best Performer Award and she has awarded with best service provider award in fishery extension service and Rastriya Samaj Seva Ratna Award etc.
