On a longtemps pensé que les livres bibliques, étant le produit de traditions orales rassemblées vaille que vaille par un rédacteur final peu soucieux d’ordre, n’étaient qu’une sorte de patchwork. De plus en plus nombreux sont les exégètes qui constatent que ces textes sont composés et bien composés. Encore faut-il les mesurer à l’aune de la tradi­tion littéraire spécifique à laquelle ils appartiennent. Ils relèvent en effet non de la rhétorique classique gréco-latine, mais de la rhétorique sémitique dont les lois sont aujourd’hui beaucoup mieux connues.            Plusieurs s’étaient intéressés de près à la composition du deuxième évangile : surtout Jean Radermakers, Benoît Standaert et Bastiaan van Iersel. Leur travail de pionnier méritait d’être repris, avec une méthodologie plus rigoureuse, désormais bien établie, l’analyse rhétorique sémitique.             La composition de Marc se révèle d’une merveille de régularité, dans son détail comme dans son architecture d’ensemble. Deux grandes sections comprennent sept séquences focalisées sur un grand discours de Jésus, le discours du commencement au chapitre 4 et le discours de l’accomplissement au chapitre 13. Entre ces deux sections, une troisième section, située en dehors des frontières d’Israël, est composée autour du discours de Jésus sur le disciple. Au centre de ce discours central — et donc au cœur de tout l’évangile — résonne la double question : « À quoi servirait à un homme de gagner le monde entier et de ruiner sa vie ? Que pourrait donner un homme en échange de sa vie ? » (8,36-37).            Curieusement, ce n’est donc pas directement sur Jésus que l’évangile de Marc est focalisé mais sur le disciple. C’est bien ce qu’a perçu l’auteur tardif de la finale longue qui achève le livre en montrant Jésus laisser toute la place à ses disciples pour la proclamation de l’Évangile de Dieu.
