About the Book

This book sets out to present the Polish-Russian conflict the way the elite of Russian society saw it. One of its chief research topics is the interaction between Russian public opinion, the policy the Empire pursued on its uncompliant subjects, and the impact the Polish conflict had on the evolution of Russian political ideas and movements. A major issue it addresses is the reaction of Russian society, its diverse political factions and social and philosophical trends and their relationship to the Polish national movement, and the effect of the Polish question on their evolution. Research in numerous archives and manuscript collections in Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, played a fundamental role in the work for this book. This book was originally published in Polish as Fatalna sprawa: Kwestia polska w rosyjskiej mysli politycznej (Kraków: Arcana, 2000). It was awarded the Klio Prize, a prestigious Polish award for the best monograph on a historical subject. This English translation is an abridged version (about 1/3 of the book's original size).

About the Author :
Henryk Glebocki is a historian specializing in Eastern Europe and the Russian Empire, and holds an associate professorship at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. He has authored and co-authored several books on the history of Central and Eastern Europe, including "Diabel Asmodeusz" w niebieskich binoklach i kraj przyszlosci. Hr. Adam Gurowski i Rosja, on Count Adam Gurowski, a Polish radical insurrectionary of 1863 who later turned pro-Russian (Kraków: Arcana, 2012); Kresy Imperium. Szkice i materialy do dziejów polityki Rosji wobec jej peryferii (XVIII – XXI wiek), on the peripheries of the Russian Empire from the 18th to 21st century, (Kraków: Arcana, 2006); The Underground, in Road to Independence – Solidarity 1980-2005 (Warszawa: Volumen and K.K. NSZZ Solidarnosc, 2005); and Policja tajna przy robocie. Z dziejów panstwa policyjnego PRL, a book on the secret police in the Polish People's Republic (Kraków: Arcana 2005).

Review :
The scale of Glebocki's quest for source materials is absolutely admirable... Henceforth no serious scholar of Polish-Russian relations, Russian political thought, or Russian nationalism will be able to skip this book with impunity. A first-rate account of the political aspect of the Polish question in Russian thought of the Great Reform Age under Alexander II. Glebocki's expert knowledge of the subject, the interesting way he formulates his observations, and the vast range of his source materials make this book truly impressive.
